Danielle Lewis

Danielle Lewis

Danielle is currently at home assisting with teaching her two older children during virtual instruction and caring for her two toddlers. Prior to 2016, she was a teacher and math specialist with 15 years of experience in education. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education with a math/science concentration from Grove City College in Pennsylvania and a Master of Education degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Virginia. She is certified to teach pre-K through sixth grade and has a math specialist license for kindergarten through eighth grade. Danielle spent her first years in education teaching fourth and fifth grades. She also has experience teaching junior kindergarten as well as teaching and coaching in all of the elementary grades in math.

Making math connect and come together for all students has been an important part of her professional career, which led to her desire to become a math specialist. Helping students overcome anxieties and negative feelings about mathematics leads her to develop lessons that empower students. Tutoring is one way that allows her to connect with students on an individual basis, helping them grow right where they are. She has tutored students in elementary and middle school grades with many of the same goals: math can be enjoyable, and math can make sense. Her use of games, visuals, and manipulatives are some of the ways that abstract mathematical ideas come within reach for learners. Danielle currently lives in Asheville, North Carolina with her husband and their four children, ages 12, 9, 4, and 1. She enjoys running, gardening, and being outdoors.

Lisa Schropp

Lisa Schropp

Lisa is a teacher and math specialist with more than a decade of experience in education. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in early childhood education with a math/science concentration from James Madison University and a Master of Education degree from the University of Virginia. She holds a pre-K through sixth grade teaching license and a kindergarten through eighth grade math specialist license. Lisa has taught at both the elementary and middle school level. Her determination to help students learn and enjoy school inspired Lisa to pursue her master’s degree in education. Realizing her passion to help students make progress along their personal academic path and change their affect toward school and mathematics, she has also spent significant time tutoring. She embraces the ideal conditions of tutoring – relationships formed, the ability to give one on one attention, the direct targeted instruction, and the propensity to build students’ confidence. Lisa and her husband have a nine year old son and a six year old daughter. Lisa enjoys time with her family hiking, playing sports, and traveling to visit family and friends.

Trish Moya

Trish Moya

Trish Moya, currently an Assistant Principal Intern at Brownsville Elementary, has a wide variety of professional experiences in the field of education. Fourteen years of teaching English to speakers of other languages has given her a strong understanding of the best practices for teaching reading and writing. In addition, she was an Instructional Coach for five years and a Math Specialist for two years, providing her with many opportunities to learn and facilitate effective math instruction for elementary students. As a private tutor in Charlottesville for two years, she worked with children ages six to twelve, successfully developing reading fluency and comprehension as well as math competencies. Currently working as a school administrator, she understands that motivation to learn steadily improves as children develop the ability to learn independently and the confidence that comes with experiencing their own success.

Wes Shelley

Wes Shelley

Wes isn’t a tutor, he’s a psychologist and specializes in testing for ADD/ADHD, dyslexia and other learning disabilities, Autism, and more.  To find out more about his private practice, click here

Although he’s not a teacher, he’s worked extensively in public schools–leading teams to make sure all students are supported and make the progress they need to.  So, he’s collaborated with countless teachers, principals, and parents to support struggling learners–in reading, writing, math, and more.  He knows good teachers, he knows good instruction, and he’s excited to bring together this dream team to support local students.

At home, Wes enjoys hiking with his wife, the family’s backyard stocktank pool project, and–of course–his three kiddos.  In his spare time he plays tennis, eats dark chocolate, and loves writing bios about himself.

We’ve got a few more teachers joining, but their bios are in-the-works.

HOW WE GOT STARTED

For over a decade I’ve worked in local schools and parents have been asking me about where to get extra help for their child.  Why?  Because oftentimes, the help they were getting at school was good, but it wasn’t intense enough.  Let’s face it, every public and private school has great teachers, but these teachers can’t always spend the intense 1:1 time with your kid in order for him to catch up.

So, they’d ask about this program or that program.  But–honestly–I couldn’t recommend most of them.  Why?  Because the programs were scripted or they didn’t directly teach skills or teachers weren’t vetted.  I didn’t want parents to invest money in something that might not pay off.

So, I decided to launch my own tutoring business.  Why?  Because helping struggling learners isn’t rocket science: it’s great teachers working intensively with your child.  No gimmicks, just hard work.  This is what leads to progress, and this is what we’re about.
